Meet the Dean - Macon Campus
Welcome to the Mercer University School of Medicine!
At Mercer, we are intentional about producing physicians and health professionals who are caring practitioners of the art and science of medicine building upon its 29 year history of excellence in education. That process starts with choosing the right students; those who will work well with their patients, the entire health-care team and are committed to serving the rural and medically underserved communities of our state. Students learn in an environment that values diversity, mutual respect, teamwork and open communication while actively participating in innovative curricula preparing them to become lifelong learners in a period of exponential growth in medical knowledge and information.
Our school was founded as a public-private partnership in 1982 in order to respond to a critical shortage of primary care physicians in rural Georgia. The school was founded on the key concepts of small group problem-based learning for the basic sciences in the first two years, a commitment to early and recurrent exposure of students to community and rural practice settings, and a strong focus on primary care specialties during the clinical years. We remain committed to these concepts that uniquely prepare students for a lifetime of service and caring. Subsequently, we have added professional programs in public health, anesthesia, marriage and family therapy, plus developing new programs this year in biomedical sciences and medical clinical psychology.
Since August, 2008, we now have a separate campus in Savannah on the Memorial University Medical Center site that admits 40 medical students annually. The school attracts highly talented students who have the ability to succeed academically and professionally in our rigorous educational and experiential based curricula in medicine and the other health professional disciplines. We actively seek students who best personify our core values of collaboration, compassion, competence, excellence, integrity, respect, honesty, and service.
Mercer is the place to choose for the stage of professional development in an environment which is comprised of a special team of students, faculty and staff all working together to educate knowledgeable skillful physicians and community professional leaders.
