The Association of American Medical Colleges-Organization of Student Representatives (AAMC-OSR)
The AAMC-OSR is the student group segment of the American Association of Medical Colleges. This group looks at issues that affect medical education and makes recommendations concerning these issues from a student's perspective. Current practices and innovations in medical education are examined. There is a national and a regional meeting each year. Representatives to this group are selected by the student body. Activities for this group are coordinated with the Office of Student Affairs.
American Medical Association - Medical Student Section (AMA-MSS)
The AMA has a membership section for medical students called the Medical Student section of the AMA (AMA-MSS). The purpose of the AMA-MSS is to promote interest and involvement in organized medicine and to encourage students to take an active part in shaping the medical profession. The AMA-MSS addresses issues which are currently affecting or, in the future, will affect the practice of medicine. Dues are $20 per year for the national organization and include the journal, "The American Medical Association" and a specialty journal. State dues are $10 per year with freshmen dues being paid by the Medical Association of Georgia (MAG). A local chapter has been established at MUSM. Representatives are encouraged to attend state and national meetings.
American Medical Student Association (AMSA)
AMSA is a national organization of medical students which has local chapters at each medical school. The purpose of AMSA is to promote student involvement in and discussion of issues that affect medical education, national health care and other broader social and political concerns. Membership, which includes "The New Physician Magazine," costs a one-time fee of $25. Members have the option of attending annual, national and regional meetings. As mentioned previously, AMSA also offer health insurance for students members.
American Medical Women’s Association (AMWA)
AMWA is a professional organization for women physicians and students. Members are offered the opportunity to build a network, develop leadership skills, and participate in Continuing Medical Education programs. Students, through AMWA, have access to low interest loans and receive scholastic recognition
through the Janet M. Glasgow Achievement Awards Program and the Carroll L. Birch Manuscript Award.

Christian Medical Association (CMA)
The Christian Medical Association is a professional society of physicians, dentists, and medical and dental students. This society helps these groups to integrate their Christian faith with their practices and studies. Opportunities are available through CMA to attend regional growth conferences and national vacation conferences.

Discipline-Based Clubs
Discipline-based clubs include: Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics and Surgery. Others may be added as student interest develops.

Faculty Committees
There are opportunities for students to participate on various faculty committees. Chairpersons of committees contact the Student Council, which in turn chooses student representatives. The membership of faculty committees changes each summer, and thus, student representatives are usually requested at the beginning of an academic year.
Family Medicine Interest Group (FMIG)
The FMIG is a student group interested in family practice as a career. There is an opportunity through the local chapter and national meetings to receive input regarding the future direction of family practice. At present the Georgia Academy of Family Physicians pays dues for freshmen and the Department of Family and Community Medicine pays the annual dues for all other students. Membership entitles students to an excellent journal, "The American Family Physician." A member of the Family Medicine Department faculty acts as advisor for this group.
Fund-Raising Projects
All fund raising activities must be pre-approved by the Student Affairs Dean. The use of the medical school logos and all drawings for tee shirts, cups, etc., must be approved by the Dean of Students and the University Public Relations Office. Forms are available in the Student Affairs Office. Items are to be sold to medical students, medical school faculty members and family members only, and must not be sold on the University campus as a whole. Organizations should not solicit funds from local businesses or individuals because such an activity has the potential for interfering with the functions of the University Advancement Office.

Master of Public Health Association (MPHA) (Graduate Only)
(Student Chapter of the Georgia Public Health Association)
The purpose of the MPHA student chapter of Georgia Public Health Association is to enhance the professional development of each student in the Master of Public Heath Program at Mercer University School of Medicine. Its mission is to create a forum for the exchanging of ideas, information, and experiences as well as training and researc collaboration related to public health issues in our community, state, and nation. Its primary purposes include: to foster positive graduate school experience for all members, to promote open communication between MPH students and administration, to enhance social interaction between students and faculty, to promote volunteerism and collaborative efforts with other community public health organizations, and to be a resource for internships, fellowships, continuing education, and career opportunities. Med Mates
Med Mates provides the opportunity for the spouses and significant others of medical students, who have newly arrived to the area, to become acquainted, foster friendships, and learn how they may mutually support each other and the medical student in their life. The organization sponsors meetings that address areas of interest and concern for its members. For more information contact the Office of Student Affairs.
MUSM Book Club
The MUSM Book Club consists of interested faculty, staff, and students who enjoy literary pursuits for pleasure. The group makes monthly recommendations based upon participant interest. Meetings are held in the Atrium of the Medical School between 6 – 7pm. Depending on group interest, selections include classics, short stories, popular press, and books related to the practice of medicine. Meeting times are scheduled around best times for students. Military Medical Student Association (MMSA)
The Military Medical Student Association is comprised of students who are recipients of the Armed Forces Health Professions Scholarship Program (AFHPSP). The organization’s goal is to provide members with information regarding the lifestyle, duties, and responsibilities of military physicians. Also, information is shared relative to residencies and the benefits of becoming a military physician.

(SNMA)
The MUSM chapter of the SNMA was chartered in the spring of 1990 by interested students at the national meeting held in Atlanta, Georgia. Established in 1964 for minority medical students, the organization welcomes all medical students to join and participate in its activities. Members have sessions concerning medical education financing, rural medicine, residency programs and research opportunities. Other activities include participation in high school career days and in health screening programs. Members also have the opportunity to attend national and regional meetings. Membership includes a subscription to "The Journal of the National Medical Association."
Student Chapter of the Georgia Rural Health Association
The student chapter of the Georgia Rural Health Association at MUSM is a network of students united by a commitment to improve health and healthcare for rural Georgians. It is the first student chapter of any rural health association in the nation and the only student organization to include members from all degree programs at MUSM, including medicine (MD), public health (MPH), and family therapy (MFT/MFS). The goals of the student chapter are to promote the participation of students in the Georgia Rural Health Association and the National Rural Health Association; to increase student awareness about the healthcare needs of rural Georgia; and to provide opportunities for students interested in gaining rural healthcare experience.

Each class elects a president/vice president and secretary.
