General Policy Statement

The Peyton T. Anderson Learning Resources Center (LRC) collection, equipment and facilities are primarily maintained to support the educational and curricular needs of the Mercer University School of Medicine (MUSM) community: students, residents, faculty and staff. However, in keeping with the school's community orientation and its mission to improve the health care and health education needs of rural and underserved Georgia, the collections of models, simulators, charts, radiographs, and pathological specimens are also made available to community organizations, area health care and other professionals, school teachers, and the rest of the Mercer community on an as-available basis. Implementation of a reserve system, similar to the one used in the Medical Library, for each curricular phase will assure ready access to key resources by MUSM students and faculty.

For profit non-MUSM groups may be charged for use of the materials and all users will be expected to pay for lost or damaged materials.

Checkout & Use Policies

LRC resources and services are provided primarily to support the mission of the School of Medicine. However, limited access to the resources and services is available to other campus and community groups. Access policies by user category are outlined in the LRC Usage Policies Chart, available in PDF format [26 KB].

Eligible users must present their Medical Library/LRC circulation card to check out materials from the LRC. These cards are issued in the Medical Library. Additional photo identification (school ID or driver's license) may be required. No fines are assessed for overdue materls, but penalty points may accrue. Replacement costs plus a $10 processing fee are billed for lost materials. Repair costs of damaged materials are assessed by the LRC Coordinator may be billed to the user as well. View the LRC Damage Policy in PDF format [5 KB].

Computer Use Policy

LRC computers are for professional and educational use by the Mercer University School of Medicine students, residents, faculty, and staff only. Please see the Mercer University Computer Facilities Access & Use Policy.

Food & Drinks in the LRC

No food or drinks are allowed in the LRC computer area, model gallery area, computer lab, or around audio-visual equipment. Food is allowed in the LRC classrooms. Please place any food items on the table outside LRC Classroom 201.

LRC Room Use Policy*

General Statement

The use of the LRC rooms is restricted to MUSM students, faculty, and staff. Non-MUSM affiliated groups may reserve the rooms in exceptional cases with the approval of the Director of the Medical Library/LRC or the LRC Coordinator. Priority is given to annually scheduled curricula events such as large group sessions, testing, Masters program classes, and wound closure sessions. Resource sessions requested by students belong to this priority group.

Annually scheduled faculty seminars/meetings and student organizational meetings have the second priority. Students may use the rooms for individual or small group study when they are not in use for larger, regularly scheduled sessions. However, rooms may not be scheduled for individual or group study sessions. In cases of conflict between these activities the faculty and/or administrative staff responsible for the programs should resolve the conflict. The LRC staff will not prioritize between these activities, though we will provide a list of conflict dates to all of the requestors to assist in resolving the issue.

Rooms are available during the hours the LRC is open. In exceptional cases arrangements may be made to have the LRC staff open the space for a specific function outside the regular hours. The LRC staff must be present during these times. Mercer Police is not allowed to let anyone in the LRC without written permission from the LRC Coordinator.

Any damage caused by any person/group is the responsibility of that person/group. Replacement costs will be assessed by the LRC Coordinato.Use of any room implies consent to this stipulation.

Reservations

The preferred method of reserving a room is to request in writing at least 48 hours before the scheduled event. All regularly scheduled curricula sessions extending through the academic year should be scheduled during the summer months prior to the beginning of the academic year. The following forms of written requests are accepted: the paper forms provided by the LRC, or a memo that provides the same information as in the request form. Phone reservations are discouraged but may be accepted for immediate simple requests. All reservations are confirmed in writing by the LRC staff within 24 hours after the request is received or sooner as needed. Copies of the confirmation forms are maintained in the LRC to resolve conflicts or complaints. All rooms may be used on short notice if not reserved for other events. For more information, please see the Room Reservations page.

Special Setups

Classrooms 201 and 202 are set up in classroom style. If other setups are needed, the group requesting use of the room is responsible for changing the setup immediately before and after the session. The requestors may put in a work order for National to arrange the room or they may set up themselves. The main requirement is that it is done immediately before and after the session so the room is ready for the next event.

Food Service

Food service is allowed in the LRC classrooms only. However, the group serving food is responsible for the clean-up immediately after the event. This includes cleaning the tabletops and removing all trash. The LRC staff can provide cleaning supplies as needed or the group may contact housekeeping staff for supplies and assistance with the cleanup.

Cancellations

If a reserved room is not needed, a cancellation notice should be sent to the LRC staff as soon as possible. Confirmation notices may be used for this purpose. As with reservations, written cancellations are requested. This will avoid misunderstandings and provide a record for the LRC staff and the requestor.

Use and storage of chemicals, medical instruments, and lab equipment in LRC

The LRC Wet Lab may be reserved for various laboratory sessions. However, no chemicals, specimens or potentially hazardous materials should be brought to the LRC without notifying the LRC staff in advance. No chemicals are to be stored in the Wet Lab. These types of materials may be utilized in the Wet Lab for educational purposes under the supervision of the faculty member in charge. After the session, the faculty member is responsible for the appropriate clean-up of the space. These restrictions must be maintained due to the fact that the Wet Lab is used for various purposes (written and oral testing, wound closure sessions, meetings, microscope slide viewing). The LRC staff cannot be responsible for any potentially hazardous materials left in the Wet Lab.

Non-hazardous materials and equipment may be stored in the Wet Lab, if they are used on a regular basis for curricula sessions. The materials should be clearly labeled containing the name of the faculty member and the name of the curricula event for which the material is to being stored.
