Internal Medicine
Introduction

The Department of Internal Medicine at the Mercer University School of Medicine was established in the early Internal Medicine Students1980's with the founding of our Medical School. Under the aegis of our founding Chair, Dr. Waddell Barnes our department began the Internal Medicine Residency Program in 1986. The residency program has been fully accredited by the ACGME since the initiation of our Charter Class. Strong support from the Medical Center of Central Georgia enables our program to focus on providing outstanding training opportunities in Internal Medicine. Our 24 categorical Internal Medicine residents are able to train in a broad and richly diverse setting. To train a well-rounded and "complete" internist, our department feels that it is important for the residents to fine-tune their sub-specialty skills on their electives and participate in meaningful research projects. Many research opportunities exist and ample support is provided to assist our residents. We are proud of our entire faculty who have demonstrated a zeal for teaching and especially enjoy the interactions with students and residents. Our teaching activities are designed to be diverse, inclusive and germane to the practice of Internal Medicine. Our department is dynamic, adaptive, and small enough to have excellent collegial communication.
