Welcome to Mercer University School of Medicine's Division of Basic Medical Sciences' Web pages. Our Division of Basic Medical Sciences is an innovative approach to interdisciplinary teaching and research. The Division is home to all preclinical faculty members from the basic sciences disciplines including Anatomy, Biochemistry, Genetics, Microbiology, Neuroscience, Pharmacology, and Physiology. All Division faculty members assume major responsibilities in the educational program, but they also participate in research and service activities. Integration of the basic sciences with clinical medicine is a keynote of our educational program. The first two years' curriculum, which is a shared responsibility between basic sciences and clinical faculty, is delivered through a problem-based format to small groups of students who meet regularly for approximately six-week periods throughout the first and second years. Materials from the different basic sciences disciplines and pathology is integrated in a manner relevant to clinical cases under discussion in each phase. All basic sciences faculty members take on three roles in this teaching program: tutor, resource person and evaluator. Many faculty members also hold joint appointments in our clinical departments where they participate in teaching and research projects. Although Mercer University School of Medicine is not considered primarily as a research institution, it provides support for research activities. Our faculty research interests have been highlighted on our Web site. There are many opportunities for undergraduate and medical students to work in our research laboratories with faculty investigators. While the School does not offer graduate degrees in the basic sciences, there are occasional opportunities for postdoctoral fellows. | | Wayne Glasgow Interim Chair Division of Basic Medical Sciences Email: glasgow_wc@mercer.edu
