CLERKSHIP
ALBANY FAMILY PRACTICE RESIDENCY PROGRAM

We are pleased that you are considering Albany and the SouthFamily Medicine Residency - Albanywest Georgia Family Medicine Residency Program for your Family Medicine Clerkship.  We are confident that we provide an outstanding rotation that combines teaching and clinical excellence with a friendly and collegial atmosphere.  We have a diverse faculty who are committed to medical education and whose knowledge spans the breadth of family medicine, with special expertise in obstetrics, sports medicine, geriatrics, and pediatrics.  In addition, our residents provide much formal and informal training and bring their own helpful and particular outlook to the medical educational process.

Most outpatient encounters take place at the Phoebe Family Care Center, which serves as the main outpatient training site for the residency program. PFCC is located in a spacious, modern, and efficient medical building with in-house lab and x-ray facilities.  We also provide outpatient experience in less urban, non-academic settings which allows a different perspective on the practice of family medicine.  You will spend approximately one week in this setting which may involve travel of approximately 20-45 minutes each way.

Your inpatient and on-call experience will be provided at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital, a 440-bed regional referral center for 26 counties in southwest Georgia.  Because the family medicine residency program is the only training program at Phoebe, you will have the opportunity to work very closely with a variety of medical and surgical specialists and subspecialists while providing care for your inpatients.

In addition to clinical experience, we also provide formal didactic sessions during lunch every day of the week.  These lectures focus on common issues in family medicine and are provided by our core faculty, community faculty, visiting physicians, and residents.

Accommodations are usually provided at the Crimmins House, named after Dr. Laurence Crimmins, former Georgia Family Physician of the Year and a recently retired member of our teaching faculty.  This nicely restored 1890’s Victorian cottage is located less than a block from the hospital and has 9 single rooms with private or semi-private baths (bring your own single sheets and towels).  Common areas include a kitchen (bring your own pots and pans if you intend to cook) and living room with TV/VCR. There is a washer and dryer in the house (bring your own detergent) as well as computer access.  There is ample parking. All meals are provided free of charge by the hospital cafeteria or by the residency program.

In summary, we believe we have created a vibrant educational atmosphere here in Albany that will provide you with an excellent rotation in family medicine.  For more information, please visit our website (www.fmresidency.com) or contact Susan Workman, our medical student coordinator (sworkman@ppmh.org).
