COLUMBUS FAMILY PRACTICE RESIDENCY PROGRAM

We at the Columbus Family Practice Residency Program Housing for Studentshave a long tradition of training medical students, and take great pride and pleasure in doing so. We have a 500-bed hospital, which is a Level 2 Trauma Center, and the Regional Perinatal Centre for Southwest Georgia. There are 36 Family Practice Residents and 4 Transitional residents; those are the only residents at our facility. Because of that, our residents receive a tremendous volume of experience and especially procedures; there is therefore much spillover for students, and the residents realize that their own skills are enhanced when they teach others.

Housing is provided literally across the street from the campus in a set of beautifully refurbished historic homes, with alarm systems and 24 hour Security patrol. Breakfast and Lufammed_columbus_insideapt.jpgnch are both provided on workdays; there are many close-by restaurants in the area for additional affordable meals.

In the Administrative Suite, there is a dedicated office for medical students, which houses 2 fully equipped computers for their use. Our educational advisor, Dr. Bill McAfee, is always available for assistance with presentations, Power Point, etc, as are our staff of 4 secretaries. We have one of the best hospital libraries in the Southeast, to which students have ready access. We also maintain several major texts, which students can check out and use while they are here.

We have 15 full-time FP Faculty as well as Chiefs of Medicine, Pediatrics, Ob-Gyn, Surgery, and ICU; and 2 Hospitalists. All of these, as well as private attendings are committed to teaching not only our residents but medical students. Students who have rotated with us have consistently given us very high marks on their experience here. I think the main reason is that since we are not a medical school, we only have a limited number of students at any given time. Therefore, the students receive a great deal of individual attention, and are made to feel very special and unique. Lectures for the students are at times literally a one-on-one experience. Many students have told us that this is the first time they were actually treated like a real doctor, a needed and integral part of the team. Our nurses in the FPC love our learners, and treat them as family. All in all, rotating at our site has been a wonderful experience for virtually all the students over the years that have ventured away from their school campus. Please consider giving us a try; I guarantee you a once-in-a/lifetime experience.
