ROME FAMILY PRACTICE RESIDENCY PROGRAM

Floyd Medical CenterWe would be delighted to have you come to beautiful northwest Georgia on your family medicine rotation. We are associated with Floyd Medical Center, a progressive, JACHO approved hospital. The hospital has only one residency program - Family Practice!  We have a fully accredited community based, twenty-one position residency.  This is a place where you will be valued and a place where you can learn in a great environment of support and collegiality. We believe you will find our residents and faculty as friendly as you could find anywhere. "We like it here, we like it a lot."  

Our best advertisement is what medical students who come here say such as:

Location:  Centrally located in northwest Georgia within easy access to Atlanta, Chattanooga, and Birmingham. Rome is located in Floyd County, Georgia which has a population of approximately 100,000.  
 
Recreational Opportunities: Numerous attractions, cultural events, historic sites, and places of natural beauty are in close proximity to Floyd Medical Center. Examples include the Rome Symphony Orchestra, Rome Little Theatre, Berry and Shorter Colleges, The Forum, Ridge Ferry Park, Rocky Mountain Recreation Area, and Little River Canyon State Park. There are many scenic trails for hiking and biking and three rivers and various lakes for boating, swimming, or fishing.
 
Resources for Students: Temporary housing, parking, and meals are provided for students on family practice rotations. A fully equipped medical library with computers is available. Exercise and work out facilities are available. Each student is given a "Resident Buddy" and a "Faculty Mentor" as an additional way to give a personal touch to the rotation experience. Scheduled social events provide opportunity for interaction between residents, faculty, and students outside the medical setting.
 
Hospital: Floyd Medical Center is a not-for-profit full service hospital of 304 beds. The hospital recently completed a 53 million dollar expansion and renovation, which will enhance its services even more. This includes a new medical student suite and lounge for those on Family Medicine rotations.
 
Residency Center: The family practice residency center is a modern, attractive, and spacious center, which the residency moved into in 2000. The residency program has had a solid history providing of comprehensive education and care and was established in 1976. The Family Practice Center Ambulatory Care Center has over 18,000 visits per year with a diverse patient population, including Hispanic.

Strong Behavioral Medicine Curriculum: A full time marriage and family therapist and pastoral counselor is on the faculty at the residency program and a full time chaplain is available at the hospital. These faculty members assist with behavioral medicine lectures and the psychosocial and spiritual aspects of care. 

Teaching: Medical students attend morning reports which include lectures and at other times are also given individual or small group lectures by family practice faculty and residents. A full time internist works at the residency in addition to the family practice faculty. Various other specialists also participate in teaching.
