Family Medicine
Introduction

Welcome to the Department of Family Medicine’s web site at Mercer University School of Medicine. The department has been an integral part and directing force at Mercfammed_clerk_casting07_5.jpger University School of Medicine since the school’s inception in 1982. Our mission has always been and continues to be that of providing a predoctoral educational experience that will prepare generalist physicians for underserved areas of the state.

We attain our goal through multiple integrated activities. Our primary activity is an 8-week clerkship program in the 3rd year. This clerkship experience can be taken at several sites across the state, thus allowing students to tailor their training to future practice plans.

Our faculty members participate extensively in the first two basic science years of medical education through active tutoring in the problem-based teaching program for which Mercer is so well known.

The Department also sponsors several fourth year electives in Geriatrics, Practice Management, International Medicine, Research, and Women’s Health. Please explore these possibilities to enhance your medical education and explore the opportunities available in the practice of Family Medicine. We welcome students visiting students from other medical schools to our senior electives. Please contact the noted instructor to begin the process (and complete appropriate documents for MUSM).

The Family Medicine Residency also sponsors a Geriatrics Fellowship, which offers one year of clinical training in Geriatric Medicine, following either a 3-year residency in Family Medicine or Internal Medicine.  Our fellowship concentrates on palliative medicine and long-term care.  Medical students are welcome to take electives in Geriatrics.  Students would participate in fellowship didactics and see older patients in a wide range of settings, including the hospital, home, nursing home, palliative care unit, and hospice.

fammed_clerk_casting07_1.jpgThe Department consists of Undergraduate, Residency, and Research units that work collaboratively to provide the student with a broad and intensive experience in primary medical care. Family Medicine works in conjunction with a large group of committed Family Practitioners teaching in private office settings. These physicians provide opportunities for students to see and participate in delivery of primary medical care in offices on a regular basis. This experience occurs early in the student’s medical school training and continues as a component in the Family Medicine Clerkship.

Family Medicine differs from other primary care specialties by providing continuous, comprehensive, cost-effective, family centered health care. It is the goal of our Department to ensure that all of our students, regardless of their ultimate specialty, are educated in these skills, thus providing a solid basis on which they can effectively perform in any of the medical disciplines.

Please investigate the rest of our site, meet our faculty, examine our opportunities, and learn about Family Medicine. Thank you for visiting with us.
