MISSION STATEMENT Welcome to the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science of the Mercer University School of Medicine. The mission of the department is: To educate and train medical students and residents to serve as primary care physicians in rural and underserved areas of Georgia; to educate and train graduate students in Marriage & Family Therapy and in Marriage & Family Services; to advance the knowledge base of psychiatry and behavioral science through research; to apply the knowledge of psychiatry and behavioral science through the provision of clinical services to the community with a high degree of excellence.
The objectives by which the mission will be accomplished are:
1. Training & education: To provide training and education in psychiatry and behavioral science for medical students and residents; to provide continuing education programs relevant to psychiatry and allied health disciplines; to train and educate graduate students to become professional Marriage & Family Therapists and to become administrators of Marriage & Family Service organizations.
2. Faculty: To recruit, retain, and develop an academically qualified faculty and provide a milieu in which continuing education, training, research, and publication will be encouraged; to promote professional integrity and intra-faculty and inter-departmental cooperation.
3. Research: To develop and support research programs for the study of mental illness and its prevention, mental health care and treatment, brain functioning, behavioral science, and family and community.
4. Clinical Services: To provide mental health services for individuals, families, and institutions at a high level of excellence.
5. Finances: To maintain a financially stable administrative structure that supports the Department’s mission.
6. Community Service: To provide a pool of highly qualified experts to serve as community speakers, consultants, and in other capacities relating to psychiatry and behavioral science.
