Welcome
The Family Medicine Clerkship is a required eight-week experience in the third year curriculum. This requirement can be served at any one of six sites across Georgia, including Macon, Savannah, Rome, Morrow, Columbus or Albany. Each clerkship site (View Sites) supports residency training in Family Medicine and has a qualified faculty that teaches students the depth and breadth of family practice. All sites are centrally coordinated thru the main campus of MUSM in Macon, but each has a third year Clerkship Director and Coordinator who ensures a consistent and quality rotation.

Our discipline emphasis is on the outpatient management of common undifferentiated problems seen in Family Medicine ( See Curriculum). We offer opportunities for patient contact in the clinic settings, private Family Practice office, nursing home, assited living, and home visits. Each student is allowed some latitude in choosing how to use the time designated to ambulatory care. Activities emphasizing adolescent medicine, sports medicine, women’s health and geriatrics are available at most sites. Each student is required to participate in 1 week of in-service during the rotation in order to experience the continuity of care offered in Family Medicine.

All students return to Macon for two days at mid-rotation in order that a series of “hands-on” workshops can be taught. These emphasize skills typically used in Family Medicine. Also, all students participate in the Standardized Patient Assessment at this time, which is a formative assessment to assist you in developing/enhancing your clinical skills.

Please explore our web resources developed to enhance your experience during your Family Medicine Clerkship. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us.
