Facilities

schoolfront.jpgThe physical hub for most of the pre-clinical educational activities is the Medical Education Building on the Mercer University campus in Macon. The two story building houses classroom, research, laboratory, library, clinical practice, and support facilities. The first floor has four functional components: The Medical Library, Auditorium, Mercer Health Systems (MHS) and the Administrative Offices. On the second floor are the tutorial rooms, faculty offices, the Biomedical Communications Center, the Peyton T. Anderson Learning Resources Center, and the research laboratories.

Mercer Medical Library & The Peyton T. Anderson Learning Resources Center
The Medical Library offers a variety of print, electronic, and audiovisual items which support the facilities_library.jpgproblem-based curriculum, faculty research and development, and community health interests. The collection contains over 60,000 volumes, including 8,000 audiovisuals, and 9,000 government documents. The library receives about 500 current print journal subscriptions, more than 3,000 electronic journals, and has access to major indexing and abstracting services. Access to library and LRC resources is through the MedCat online catalog, which includes collections on the Macon and Savannah campuses, as well as those in several hospital libraries which participate in the GaIN (Georgia Interactive Network for Medical Information) network.

A full range of reference services is provided by the Library staff. Classes on library and information technology topics are taught on request by Library & Learning Resources Center faculty and staff. Instruction is available for individuals or groups. The Library is capable of searching more than 300 computer databases including all the National Library of Medicine resources: PubMed/MEDLINE, Gateway, TOXNET; as well as GALILEO, the State of Georgia's electronic library service. Electronic-based interlibrary loan services connect the Medical School Library users with other biomedical library loan collections throughout the Southeast and the nation. The Library offers desktop document delivery of photocopied articles via email upon request. Current journal shelving, a well-monitored reserve collection, and study rooms and carrels make the Library attractive for individual and group study.

The Library serves as the center of the Georgia Interactive Network for Medical Information. Better known as GaIN, the network is computer-based and offers the student access to the online catalog, health-related databases, full-text books and journals. GaIN also links other Georgia health institutions and professionals with the information resources at the Medical School. Computers are available in the library, the Learning Resources Center, the student tutorial area, and at the Medical School's remote educational sites throughout the state. Faculty and students with personal computers and laptops can also access GaIN from their offices and homes.

The Peyton T. Anderson Learning Resources Center (LRC) collections, equipment and facilities are primarily maintained to support the educational and curricular needs of the Mercer University School of Medicine (MUSM) community: students, residents, faculty and staff. The LRC provides a health sciences model gallery, computer lab with interactive software, meeting rooms and a multi-disciplinary wet lab. In addition to an extensive model collection; the LRC also houses x-rays, microscope slides and plastinated specimens.

There are also two other libraries on the Macon campus that may be used: the Walter F. George School of Law Library and the Jack Tarver Library. Together, these libraries house approximately 450,000 volumes. A quick online link is also provided directly from the Medical Library’s MedCat to the other Mercer library collections.

Mercer Health Systems (MHS)
MHS housed in the medical education building and other facilities near campus, provides continuous and comprehensive care to a population of patients as well as clinical learning experiences for medical and master of family therapy students. MHS is organized as a multispecialty clinic with x-ray, laboratory, and patient education services.

Faculty Offices
Faculty office arrangement in the Medical Education Building is interdisciplinary, reflecting the School's integrated approach to medical education.

IT & Media Services
This center provides the photographic and graphic art support for instructional materials requested by faculty and staff.

Research Laboratories
At Mercer University School of Medicine there are active research programs in basic medical and clinical sciences, medical information and medical education. Most of these programs are supported with external grants from federal and private sources. The research is conducted both in and out of the Medical School building. A group of modern research laboratories accommodates most of the basic science research within the building. Faculty offices, laboratories, and educational areas are hard-wired for data and video transmission and reception. The Medical Library has an advanced computer center which is linked to physician's offices and hospital libraries throughout the state of Georgia and to the National Library of Medicine. Clinical research is based mainly at the Medical Center of Central Georgia. Student participation in ongoing research projects may be arranged during elective or other periods. In addition, each medical student must complete a Community Science clinical research project as a part of the curriculum.

Auditorium
The Auditorium is an educational facility designed to accommodate seminars, symposia and workshops sponsored by the School of Medicine. Three smaller meeting rooms, nearby, complement the auditorium and serve as the primary teaching site for students in masters programs for family therapy, family services and public health.

Other Health Care Facilities
Mercer medical students learn and practice medicine in a variety of health care facilities including a number of regional community hospitals and clinics throughout the state. The Medical Center of Central Georgia in Macon and the Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah serve as the primary teaching hospitals for junior and senior students taking required rotations. The former is the second largest community hospital in Georgia; it presently serves over 50 middle Georgia counties. The latter is a 530 bed regional center for approximately 450,000 people in southeast Georgia and southern South Carolina. Each offers a full range of general hospital services, as well as various specialized clinics, and serves as a referral center for its region. Both have demonstrated a strong history of commitment to medical education through their graduate education programs in several medical specialties.

In addition to the facilities available at the Medical School, the Medical Center of Central Georgia with its Family Health Center and the Memorial Health University Medical Center, Mercer University has affiliations with the Floyd Medical Center in Rome, the Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital in Albany, the Atlanta Medical Center in Atlanta, and the Medical Center in Columbus for family practice clerkships and with other hospitals to provide additional training to the students in psychiatry and senior elective clerkships. Also, contracts with private physicians in the Macon area and in rural communities provide opportunities for additional training in primary care practice and community medicine.
