Suggestion for Purchase Form to submit your requests to us.

Online Catalog

The library's online catalog, also referred to as MedCat, is available via the web from any computer with access to the Internet. MedCat may be searched by author, title, keyword, or subject. Instruction in using MedCat is available from library staff; please ask for assistance at the Circulation Desk.

Collection Arrangement

Books - Books are shelved according to the National Library of Medicine's subject classification scheme. An outline of this scheme is located on the end of each section of shelving in the book section, or you may wish to review this Fact Sheet on NLM Classification.

Audiovisuals - Most are located on the Audiovisuals shelves near the center of the library. Ask a staff member for assistance. As with the book collection, audiovisuals are arranged by the National Library of Medicine classification. You may search the online catalog, MedCat, for an audiovisual as you would for a book. Audio-Digest cassette tapes are filed by subject in the cabinets behind the Sealy Room.

Journals - Journals are arranged in alphabetical order by title in the journal stacks. Recent journal issues are on special shelves arranged by day of receipt at the beginning of the journal stacks. The current issues are moved to the carousels in the library "pit." All older journal issues are shelved in the journal stacks along with the bound volumes. You can find which journals we own and our holdings for each title by using MedCat.

Government Documents - Government Documents are arranged by Superintendent of Documents [SuDOC] number. New titles may be searched through MedCat. Older items can be located through the MEDOC Indexes.

X-Rays, Models, Specimens, CAI - Anatomical models, simulators, charts, disarticulated bones, x-rays from the American College of Radiology Learning File, plastinated pathological specimens and computer assisted instruction programs housed in the LRC are all searchable on MedCat.
