Printing

How much is charged for printing?

Black & white prints cost 8 cents/page and color prints cost 20 cents/page. Mercer School of Medicine students, faculty, and staff use their Bear Cards for printing, adding value as needed. For non-afflilated library users, a print card is available for use at the Library front desk, or they may purchase their own card from the regenerator located next to the photocopy machines, at a cost of $2.00.

The Medical School will provide each freshman and sophomore medical student an allotment of $80.00 for printing each year. This will be credited to the students' Mercer Bear Card print accounts; unused credit will be voided on July 31 each year. In order to make additional printouts after the allotment is used up, students will need to add value to their Bear Cards, and can do so using the regenerator located in the Medical Library, or online at http://www.bearcardoffice.com/BbOne/BearCard/Deposits.htm

Junior and senior medical students will be allotted $12.00 for printing each year. As with freshmen and sophomores, this will be credited to the students'  Bear Card print accounts and may be used towards printing only.

If they do not already have one, junior and senior medical students need to obtain a Mercer Bear Card (at Auxiliary Services on the Macon campus) so that their allotment can be added. If students do not have a Bear Card card, they cannot receive their print allotment. Unused credit will be voided on July 31 each year.

NOTE: Photocopy and print allotments are on two separate accounts. You cannot use your print allotment in place of your photocopy allotment, and vice versa. Once funds from your photocopy and print accounts are depleted, these accounts will then pull funds from your Bear Bucks account. In order to make additional prints or photocopies after the allotted amounts, students will need to add value to their Bear Cards, as noted above.

MUSM faculty or staff with prior approval from their department can charge print pages to their departments by using generic print cards available at the Library and LRC circulation desks. Quarterly invoices will be submitted to the department or directly to the faculty or staff member at the cost of $.10/page. If a departmental print account has been set up through Auxiliary Services, the faculty and staff member may use their Mercer ID Bear Card and charges will be applied directly to the department's account. Instructions for using the Bear card to pay for printing are posted by each Bear card reader. If you have questions, please go to the Circulation Desk for help.

Masters Students in the MPH, MFT, and MSA programs receive no print allotment.

Where are the printers?

The Library has a black & white printer, and the tutorial hall has a printer that prints either color or black & white. The LRC has one of each: a printer for black & white copies only and a printer that can print either black & white or color.

Currently, the default on most printers is black & white single-sided printing. If you choose to print in duplex (double-sided), note that you will be charged for each printed side. If you wish to print in color (available only on one of the LRC printers and the tutorial hall printer), you will need to choose the correct print spooler from the drop down-printer box (File-Print-Select Printer) on the print menu before you send the job to the print management station. You can change the print spooler on the drop down menu to color duplex (double-sided) or color simplex (single-sided). Note that once you change the print spooler to color, the system will automatically recognize the pages that are only in black & white and charge them accordingly: it will charge you 20 cents for pages that are in color, but just 8 cents for pages that are only black & white.

Another change in maintaining the system concerns the paper supply. Auxiliary Services will now be supplying printer paper and monitoring how much paper is used as well as how many pages are actually printed. Therefore, it is VERY important that paper not be removed from any printer (especially the printer on the tutorial hall) to be used for non-printer purposes.

If you have problems using the printers, please see someone at the Library or LRC circulation desks. For questions about the new system, please contact Mercer Help Desk Services, 478-301-2922. If you have any other questions, concerns or suggestions, please let library staff know.

What are my alternatives to printing?

It is often possible to e-mail results to yourself for printing elsewhere, or to copy them to computer disks or CDs. Instructions are posted at each print workstation and at various locations among the public workstations. Don't hesitate to ask for help at the Circulation Desk!

The Peyton T. Anderson Learning Resources Center on the 2nd floor has a color printer for use by MUSM faculty, students and staff ONLY. Color copying is also available through Auxiliary Services at the Copy Center .

How do I add money to my Bear card?

The regenerator, located in the Medical Library next to the photocopy machines, allows you to add value to your card. An online option is available as well at http://www.bearcardoffice.com/BbOne/BearCard/Deposits.htm

Do print jobs stay in the queue until I pay for them?

Once a print job has been sent to the print queue, you have two hours to pay for and release the printing. After three hours, print jobs will time out.

What do I do if the printer does not work?

Go to the Circulation Desk for assistance. Don't hesitate to ask for help!

What happens if I make a mistake? Will I be charged? How do I cancel a print job?

Whenever the system permits, you should preview your work by using the browser's PRINT PREVIEW capability before sending it for printing. It is your responsibility to determine if there are any problems in content, arrangement, etc. before going to PRINT.

How do I cancel a print job?

There is no need to cancel a print job; if you don't release it, it will be deleted in 2 hours. You are not charged for a print job until you release it. Circulation Desk staff will also be happy to help you.
