Research Scholar Program

Purpose: To offer research opportunities for Mercer medical students between their first and secondresearchscholar07.jpg years.

Description: During the spring of the year, first year students are invited to review abstracts submitted by MUSM faculty for students to work on during the summer. Students and faculty are matched for compatibility and interest in the research topic. It is expected that students participate as a member of the faculty research team and learn how to conduct research. Seminars are held weekly covering topics such as the research question, scientific integrity, library resources, how to make a scientific presentation, preparing an abstract, and collaboration. Students formally present their projects to the faculty and MUSM students at the conclusion of the summer and also prepare posters for MUSM’s Research Day.

Eleven medical students participated in the Research Scholar Program this summer. The program, in its fourth year, is a 6-week research opportunity for rising MSII students coordinated by the Office of Faculty Development. Interested students are matched with research scientists or clinicians and function as active members of the research team getting hands on experience with a research project. In addition to conducting research, students participate in a weekly seminar program culminating in a formal presentation of their results during the Family Medicine Research Seminar Series. Support for the students is provided by faculty research grants and is supplemented by the Dean's office. For more information on this program please contact the following:
