All classes listed below are held in the LRC Computer Lab and are offered on demand. There is no minimum class size; we can work with you one-on-one, or offer a seminar for up to 16 persons. Classes are normally available between 9 AM - 5 PM, but Library staff will also be happy to work with you to present a class at other times to meet your needs. Advanced PubMed Searching Roxanne Nelson
This hands-on class is intended for those who already have a working knowledge of the PubMed system. Students will be introduced to more advanced searching concepts, including building searches through applying Limits; using the MeSH browser, subheadings, and History features; and saving and manipulating search strategies and results. Consumer Health Resources on the Internet Anna Krampl
Participants will explore electronic patient education and consumer health information available through Mercer’s PEACHI website and other online resources. Learn how to evaluate the information on web sites, locate patient handouts on various conditions, find prescription drug information written for the layman, and investigate animated online tutorials in English and Spanish. Evidence-Based Medicine Library Resources Anna Krampl
This class will focus on locating and using evidence-based research tools for clinical problem solving. Students will be introduced to the Cochrane Library, the National Guidelines Clearinghouse, the PubMed Clinical Queries function, and other online resources. This hands-on class will introduce you to all of the GaIN network services including electronic mail; databases such as MEDLINE, Cochrane, and MD Consult; popular GaIN Current Literature Alerts; the Library's online catalog; and more. (1.0 Contact Hours) Prerequisites: a login and password for GaIN
Introduction to GALILEO Rita Smith
This class will introduce students to resources available through GALILEO (Georgia Library Learning Online). Students will learn the basics of searching GALILEO databases, including how to access full-text articles in medicine, nursing, healthcare administration, and other subject areas. Locating Funding & Grant Information on the Internet Rita Smith
This class will introduce participants to the multitude of medicine and health funding resources available on the Internet. Online funding announcements and “how-to” materials from government agencies, foundations, and other entities will be covered. The class will examine funding resources from the Health Resources and Services Administration, the National Institutes of Health, the Foundation Center, and others. Medical Image Resources To Be Announced
This course provides a review of online resources providing access to image and multimedia files for use in health sciences education. Focus is on images.MD, but other resources are also covered. (1.0 Contact Hours) Prerequisites: None
PubMed Basics Anna Krampl The purpose of this hands-on class is to help participants learn to search the PubMed (MEDLINE) database, a free resource from the National Library of Medicine. Students will be introduced to the basics of Boolean searching, and will be offered tips for narrowing search results and finding the information they need for research or clinical problem solving. RefWorks Roxanne Nelson or Anna Krampl
This course introduces the Web-based reference management program RefWorks, available to all MUSM students, faculty, and staff. Using Refworks, researchers can create personal reference databases by importing citations from online databases (including PubMed) or by entering data manually. Citations can then be used to format papers and create reference lists or bibliographies. If you are currently using EndNote, Reference Manager, or ProCite, you can easily import those files into your RefWorks account. Learn how with this class. (1.0 Contact Hours) Prerequisites: None
