Graduate School and Fellowship Opportunities Posted Dec 2011: The University of Wisconsin Population Health Service Fellowship is currently recruiting up to four more Fellows with appointment terms beginning July 2012. The Wisconsin Population Health Service Fellowship is a two-year service and training program designed for masters prepared individuals in public health and allied sciences. Candidates with doctoral degrees may also apply. The two-year program provides applicants with practical field assignments in community based, non-profit, governmental and health service organizations. The application process for the Fellowship is currently open and closes on December 16. Posted Dec 2011: Ph.D. research opportunity in health-environment interactions at Penn State University
Dr. Brian King (Department of Geography, Penn State University) is recruiting a Ph.D. student beginning in August 2012 to work on health-environment research. The Ph.D. student will be expected to work as a research assistant (RA) on the National Science Foundation supported project (GSS-1056683) Political Ecologies of Health: Coupling Livelihood and Environment Responses to HIV/AIDS. The project will be completed over five years in South Africa and is specifically designed to address how livelihood systems adjust in response to HIV/AIDS; how livelihood responses to HIV/AIDS rework access patterns and the rules governing resource use; and variations in intra-household and intra-community livelihood responses to HIV/AIDS.
The student assigned to the project will need to pursue a Ph.D. in geography at Penn State, and will hold the RA position in their first two years (academic years 2012-2014). Students would be eligible for funding in years three and four through the Department of Geography as teaching assistants.
RA duties will include travel to South Africa to complete qualitative fieldwork, data coding and analysis, and additional data collection. There will be multiple opportunities for academic publishing and the development of teaching materials on health-environment subjects. Applicants with previous research experience, interest in developing an independent dissertation topic on related subjects, and interest in South Africa will be particularly competitive.
