
MPH Program Awards
Graduating MPH student, Claudia Twum, gave an excellent oral presentation on the research project titled “Pesticide Exposure and Perceptions on the Effect of Environmental Factors on Childhood Obesity” at the Break the Cycle of Children’s Environmental Health Disparities Conference held in the Woodruff Health Sciences Administration Building at Emory University on May 6, 2010. The conference is a collaboration project from several universities in the nation, led by Southeast Pediatric Environmental Health Specialty Unit at Emory University. She is shown here with her professor and research mentor, Yudan Wei, Ph.D., M.D., M.P.H.

Crystal Davis, first-year MPH student, gave a presentation
on the research project she has conducted with Dr. Yudan Wei, associate
professor in the Department of Community Medicine, titled “Assessing arsenic
exposure from drinking water before and after the improvement of water supply
and the health effects on children in endemic regions of China,” at the Break
the Cycle of Children’s Environmental Health Disparities Conference held in
Rollins School of Public Health, Emory University on May 5. It is a
collaboration project from several universities in the nation, led by Southeast
Pediatric Environmental Health Specialty Unit at Emory University, to reduce
environmental health disparities in vulnerable children.
2011 Public Health Leadership Award
This award is given to a graduating student who has demonstrated leadership within the MPH program during their time here at Mercer. Students are nominated by faculty members and must be active in community based public health, be recognized as exhibiting strong leadership abilities in public health, and exhibit public health skill sets required to address the needs of a changing public health landscape. The student must be in good standing with a 3.5 GPA or higher, and must have only 6 credit hours left or less required for graduation.
The 2011 Public Health Leadership Award went to Ms. Elma-Lorainne Diggs.
2011 Most Outstanding Teacher Award
This award is given to an instructor by the student body. They nominate and vote upon this award and it is given at graduation.
The 2011 Most Outstanding Teacher Award went to Dr. Melissa Thompson.
2011 Faculty of the Year Award
This award is given to a faculty member based on a set criteria, and the final decision is made by a committee and the Community Medicine Department Chair. Each faculty may submit their credentials for consideration for this prestigious award.
The 2011 Faculty of the Year Award went to Dr. Nannette Turner.
