Stephen S. Yost, D.O., Academic ChairWelcome to the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science of the Mercer University School of Medicine. The Psychiatry Clerkship is a six week program that furthers the mission of the department to advance the knowledge base of psychiatry and behavioral science through research; to apply the knowledge of psychiatry and behavioral science through the provision of clinical services to the community with a high degree of excellence.

Clerkship Goals:

  1. The student will develop competency in psychiatric evaluation and treatment.
  2. The student will develop knowledge and skills that will assist in recognizing and treating psychiatric illness in primary care, emergency, and other non-psychiatric settings.
  3. The student will develop interview skills and skills in developing therapeutic alliances with patients.
  4. The student will develop the knowledge base necessary to pass USMLE steps 2 and 3 and to obtain the core knowledge in psychiatry and the behavioral sciences that is considered necessary to the practice of medicine.
