Laboratory research (Membrane Biology Group) is focused on the folding and translocation of mitochondrial proteins that regulate steroid hormone synthesis. Particular emphasis on steroidogenic acute regulatory protein (StAR) that facilitates the movement of cholesterol for the outer to inner mitochondrial membrane and is the first step in steroidogenesis. Also characterizes the regulation of 11-beta hydroxylase activity in the production of aldosterone. Regulation of these metabolic pathways is a key component of endocrine disorders, some cancer cell types, and in hypertension and cardiovascular disease.
