Mercer’s PhD in Biomedical Sciences (BMS) Program is designed to provide high-quality training to prepare graduates for a successful career in biomedical research, whether in academia or industry. The program is designed to be completed in five years with a possible extension if needed.

Students will work closely with research mentors in Department of Biomedical Sciences on any of the School’s three full-program campuses: Columbus, Macon, or Savannah. The students will have the opportunity to choose research projects in various biomedical disciplines including biochemistry, neuroscience, microbiology, virology, cancer biology, cardiology, immunology, toxicology, and physiology.

The PhD in Biomedical Sciences program fosters academic growth and personal development while promoting interdisciplinary research through small-group discussions, lectures, and bench research projects. The curriculum is designed to provide the training and independence needed for a successful career in biomedical sciences. Students gain teaching experience in various educational settings, preparing them for professorships at the college or university level.
