Student Handbook

The Mercer University School of Medicine Student Handbook describes the expectations for behavior and conduct in our community and outlines the procedures to be followed when these expectations are not met. It includes the Student Code of Conduct, the Academic Integrity Policy, as well as other rules, regulations, and policies governing student life.

Canvas Learning Management System (LMS)

Canvas is the trusted, learning management system (LMS) that’s revolutionizing the way we educate. Canvas is an online course system that supports supplementary learning tools in an online environment. Students can download course materials (e.g., course syllabus, supplemental readings), view course announcements, review course calendars, track grades, or participate in online discussion boards using Canvas. For more information or to get access, visit the Canvas Homepage.

Medical Library & Learning Resources

The MUSM Skelton Medical Libraries support student curriculum through a variety of print and online resources. The libraries help provide all primary reserve materials through physical print copies or electronic access, along with access to National Board study resources and books. The libraries support student research with over 17,000 online journals, over 300,000 online books, and over 140 databases. Clinical practice and research is further supported through point-of-care, evidence-based resources such as DynaMed, Cochrane Library, and more. Reference and Interlibrary Loan services are available to all students at no cost.

Student Interest Groups & Opportunities

At Mercer University School of Medicine (MUSM), students’ experiences are enhanced by interprofessional activities and programs outside of the classroom. Student interest groups provide opportunities for students to participate in and build meaningful connections with others who share similar interests.  Student interest group activities are educational, intellectual, interdisciplinary, cultural, and social in nature.   These activities help students develop leadership and workplace skills, collaborative relationships with others, and a sense of one’s personal identity.

Student Support

We anticipate that some students will continue (as they always have) to recognize that they are coping poorly with stress and seek assistance before impairment occurs. It is not uncommon for students to experience heightened levels of stress, insecurity and in some cases anxiety and depression while attending medical school.  Additionally, students may find themselves at risk of abusing alcohol and drugs.  Coupled with the demands of the medical curriculum are life events that occur outside of the classroom.  Students may experience a significant breakup or divorce, the illness or death of a loved one, or personal illness. Under such circumstances it is a sign of strength for a person to seek help. The School of Medicine utilizes the structure of the Office of the Dean of Student Affairs to provide resources and facilitate referral for students in such circumstances.

Disability and Testing Accommodations Policy

If a student has a disabling condition he or she may be eligible for accommodations.  It is in the intent of Mercer University School of Medicine (MUSM) to create a transparent accommodations environment for those students receiving testing accommodations.  Students who believe that they should receive testing accommodations should contact the Associate Dean of Student Affairs in Macon at 1-800-Mercer-U to begin the application process.

As required by law, students requiring accommodations for a disability must initially self-identify as a student with a disability by registering with the Office of ACCESS and Accommodation Services. Requesting accommodations is an interactive process and should be completed in a timely manner to allow adequate time for accommodation arrangements to be made.  Accommodations may be requested at any time during the academic year regardless of when the student is diagnosed.

For complete instruction on requirements, see the current version of the MD Program Handbook, or contact Student Affairs.
